Kundalini Yoga is a blend of spiritual and physical practices that incorporates movement, breathing techniques, meditation, and the chanting of mantras that build physical vitality and increase consciousness. Yvonne Perry will be hosting Kundalini Yoga “Experiencing the Infinite” lead by Lori Miles (Akaljot Kaur) at Sweet Home Retreat Center on Sunday, March 20 from 4 to 6 PM. This class is for beginners or experienced yogis who are interested in learning and experiencing “The Yoga of Awareness.”
Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is the Yoga of Awareness and is the manifestation of divine universal life force energy to forklift the soul for union with the higher self. As we connect with the deepest sense of our self we are slowing the mind and heightening our awareness to become conscious of what is no longer serving our divine purpose.
The class will include:
- Kriya or movement, posture (asana)
- Body locks (bandhs)
- Eye/mental focus (dristi)
- The sacred sound current (the Naad of Shabad Guru). Mantra is repeated aloud or silently.
- Breathing (pranayam). When we learn to breathe consciously, we can calm our minds and master all aspects of our lives through the awareness of simply observing the breath. Meditation to develop a “quiet mind”
- Sacred hand gestures (mudras)
- Deep relaxation

As Lori demonstrates in the video below, the kriyas and meditations in kundalini yoga are more specific than a regular yoga flow class. Rather than focusing on physical alignment and poses, the kriyas are exercises that generate energy and bring you to a state of greater awareness. Kundalini practice allows transformation to occur.
Within the practice of kundalini yoga, there are moments of stillness to connect within. This sheds light on our self-imposed limitations and invites us to listen to our intuition. The breathwork unveils consciousness, and strengthens your nervous system, balances your glandular system, purifies the body, and calms the mind.
